Applying for a job in English
As with any job, if you are applying for a position in a foreign company, it is important to take your time and produce as good an application as possible. Remember that a Personnel Manager or Recruitment Officer is likely to have a pile of applications on his/her desk. Your application is your chance to show that you are the best candidate for the position.
If you would like help with your application, please first read through this information before writing your CV and covering letter in English. You can then bring or send your application to Angela Pitt who will be happy to read and discuss it with you. If you are writing an application in English for a placement or a job, or even if you are simply talking about your studies, it is inevitable that you will have to find suitable English terminology to describe life at the university. This is a particularly difficult task as many aspects of the German education system have no direct equivalents in other countries. For example some dictionaries will provide seven or eight translations for the word "Fachhochschule". In the material available for downloading you will find recommended translations or explanations. Please also refer to Course Terminology for suggestions on how to describe individual courses and subjects in English.
